About the author

My name is Karen Throsby, and I am an Associate Professor in the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds, as well as being the Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies (CIGS).

My research focuses on the intersections of gender, technology and the body across diverse sites including reproductive technology, the surgical management of obesity and marathon swimming. I am the author of When IVF Fails: Feminism, Infertility and the Negotiation of Normality (2004, Palgrave), co-editor (with Flora Alexander) of Gender and Interpersonal Violence: Language, Action and Representation (2008, Palgrave),  and most recently, the author of Immersion: Marathon Swimming, Identity and Embodiment (2016, Manchester University Press).

I also blog about marathon swimming here , and am on Twitter as @thelongswim - you can follow me via the link on the home page.
